These are just a few of the places within easy reach of Les Charmettes.

LUNA PARK  (About 1 mile)

Local fun fair open in July and August.

LA PALMYRE  (About 3 miles)

Local seaside town with plenty of shops, a couple of supermarkets and good seafood restaurants.  There's a port, small beach and a fabulous bay for windsurfing.  La Palmyre is home to the No 1 Zoo in France with lots of animals in natural surroundings.  Don't miss the Sunday morning market!

LA TREMBLADE  (About 3 miles)

An interesting small market town with an attractive port from where you can take a boat trip to the famous oyster beds.  The quality of food from the covered Market Hall is superb and a large outside market is held on Saturday mornings.  En route to La Tremblade is a "Champion" supermarket.

MARENNES  (About 5 miles)

Panoramic views from the top of the church spire of the La Seudre river estuary.  Beautiful Louis III chateau and grounds.  A LeClerc supermarket on the outskirts.

BROUAGE  (About 10 miles)

A fortified citadel encircled by marshes built in 1555.  A haven for upmarket craft shops.

ILE d'OLERON  (About 10 miles)

Cross the bridge for free to France's second largest island, take a day to drive from town to town and stop off at sandy beaches such as the Grand Plage and the Plage de Gatseau at St Trojan.

MORNAC-SUR-SEUDRE (About 10 miles)

Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France Mornac-sur-Seudre is a place that tourists passing through the area like to visit and once visited there is an urge to return for the atmosphere and for just strolling around.

The 14th century market is a good starting point for a visit.  From there, on the right-hand side you will see the fortified bell tower of the church of Saint Nicholas.  The interior of the church, a little below street level, with beautiful Romanesque columns, is well worth looking around before leaving by the door on the left, which leads to the stairs going up to the bell tower.

On leaving the church, continue along la rue du Port which curves down to the small square in front of the port.  Alternatively, you can take the slightly longer route through the alleys which will lead eventually to the port, just follow the downhill slope.

At any time of the day or evening during the season, you can always take a small break for refreshments.  "La Bonne Tarte", on the left-hand side walking down la rue du Port and open all the year round, is famous for its plum tarts.

A little lower down on the right-hand side of the port, the creperie, pictured right, installed in the old mill, with a very pleasant terrace overlooking the marsh, offers a wide and varied menu at very reasonable prices and a very warm reception.

ROYAN  (About 15 miles)

A bustling modern seaside resort totally rebuilt during the fifties.  A very good LeClerc hypermarket and if the kids are getting withdrawal symptoms there's a McDonalds!

TALMONT  (About 30 miles)

Hollyhocks mean Talmont.  There, in this village with low houses and small alleys, there are hollyhocks everywhere.  Wherever you walk you cannot escape them.  They stand proudly all around and you'll be able to get hollyhock seeds there if you're a keen gardener.  Numerous craftsmen and artists work in the village and a must is the church surrounded by a cemetery standing on the cliff at the edge of the water.
